Carrivick Sisters

2010 BBC 2 Young Folk Award Finalists

"I am very impressed by The Carrivick Sisters, one of the best young duos I’ve ever heard. The girls sing and play as one and their work is characterised by great musicality. They are not only very talented instrumentalists and singers but they write really good songs as well." Ralph McTell

“Demonstrating rare instrumental and vocal superiority that puts their colleagues to shame… this is one duo which is going places.”   Maverick Magazine 5*review

“Is there anything these young ladies can't do?” Folk & Acoustic Music

“Great gig last night, absolutely fantastic performance and a sell out show”  Nick Byrne, Manager, The Watermark Theatre

Just out of their teens, twin sisters Charlotte and Laura Carrivick have grown up playing and writing music together. Their unique style shows their strong bluegrass influences without obscuring their English roots. With tight harmonies that only siblings can achieve, they perform their original songs on guitar, fiddle, mandolin, dobro and clawhammer banjo. They have performed both in the UK and internationally.

Both sisters have had varied musical influences. Laura started out with Classical violin at 10 but was soon more interested in folk music, playing along to Chieftains CD’s. Charlotte also started out classically, but in her case with guitar. Charlotte picked up the mandolin a few years later and in 2003 they attended the ‘Sore Fingers’ bluegrass course. This was where Laura first heard the dobro, which she started playing a year later. In recent months Charlotte has taken up the clawhammer banjo, sometimes bringing a more old timey feel to their sound.

They recorded their first CD 'My Own Two Feet' two years ago at home. Their second CD, "Better Than 6 Cakes" was recorded at Modern World Studios in September 2007 and has attracted great critical acclaim. A new CD, Jupiter’s Corner, was released in early 2009. It was mixed by Joe Rusby at Pure Studios and has received rave reviews already.

Together the sisters have performed at major festivals in the Netherlands, Canada, USA and Austria and during 2009 will have performed at 15 UK festivals including Glastonbury, Crawley, St Ives International, Sidmouth, Wadebridge, Ards Guitar Festival, Westport, Southwell, Gower, the Acoustic Festival of GB. Last year they even won the South West Buskers and Street Entertainers Competition and are four times winners of BBC 3’s Upstage Talent Show. Oh and they’ve also supported Show of Hands, Uncle Earl and Curved Air

This year they have been invited to SxSW in Texas and are already set to share a stage with Martin Simpson, Ralph McTell, Eliza Carthy, The Coal Porters and Po’Girl. That’s a lot to pack in given their youth – but just wait ‘til you hear them!

Our View. Mature, confident but with an innocent charm that is totally disarming, these two girls are a complete knockout. The music is fabulous and a product of  the overwhelming passion for what they do. A promoters dream!
