Catherine MacLelland, from Prince Edward Island on Canada’s east coast, has an extraordinary voice that insinuates its way into your heart and just won’t let go. Combine this with expert songwriting, fine musicianship and a riveting stage presence and you have one of the most compelling artists touring today.
As a young songwriter Catherine MacLellan did not have to look far for inspiration and insight into the creative process. She's the daughter of Canadian music legend, singer/songwriter Gene MacLellan, the writer of such huge international 70s hit songs as "Snowbird" (the Anne Murray classic) and "Put Your Hand In The Hand" (Ocean).
Her potential was first displayed in the Canadian folk group ‘The New Drifts’ before going on to make her debut album ‘Dark Dream Midnight’ in 2004. ‘Church Bell Blues’ followed in 2007, picking up a host of plaudits from international magazines such as Q, Maverick, fRoots, the Austin Chronicle, and Boston Globe. It also became the no1 on Canada’s iTunes download chart – that’s also when the comparisons with Joni Mitchell started arriving.
In 2009 she released ‘Water In The Ground’, another hugely popular CD and toured with Bruce Cockburn in the USA and with Stephen Forbert in the UK. During this time she visited Paris, Cannes, Berlin, New York, London, and Memphis building a significant international fan base. That year she was also voted Solo Artist of the Year at 2009 Canadian Folk Music Awards.
Since then Catherine has won lots more awards including Female Singer of the Year (2010) and Folk Recording of the Year (2010) at the prestigious East Coast Music Awards.
Nominated for two seperate 2012 Canadian Folk Music Awards - Contemporary Singer of the Year & Songwriter of the Year (English)
Official showcase artist for the 2012 North American Folk Alliance
‘Silhouette’ is her highly anticipated new album, to be released in the UK in
September 2011. The record captures MacLellan at her best - stitching together
elegantly woven songs with her memorable blend of heartfelt lyrics and catchy melodies.
Produced by David Baxter and featuring special guest performances from Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo fame and folk songstress Jadea Kelly, Silhouette is a reminder that Catherine's songwriting and musicianship are unparalleled among performers of her generation.
“At one point the stage was tuned over to Prince Edward Island-based Catherine MacLellan, the beautiful, pure-voiced daughter of the late songwriter Gene MacLellan. She performed gracefully; with each unfailingly reached note, Taylor Swift’s popularity became more unaccountable.” – Toronto Globe and Mail
“Water in the Ground has had me whistling, singing along and banging the dashboard every time I put it on. Catherine MacLellan may just have the key for what ails us. Highly recommended for the young at heart and pure of spirit.” – No Depression
“MacLellan is a lyricist wise beyond her years and with a voice like honey dusted in gold, MacLellan shares the gentle darkness of her lyrics, which are sometimes countrified, sometimes lamentful, and sometimes tinged with joy.” - For Folk’s Sake
“Already drawing comparisons to Joni Mitchell in her native Canada, she’s a charming talent: delicate yet not wispy, poetic yet not pretentious.” - Daniel Gewertz, Boston Herald
“Daughter of Canadian songwriter Gene MacLellan, Catherine MacLellan has one of the finest singing voices and mature styles we’ve heard in recent times. As like poetry in motion, words spill from her as she sings songs from her third and latest True North album, Water In The Ground” – Americana UK
“MacLellan's music slowly sneaks into your head and, once there (thankfully), refuses to leave. You'll put this album on again and again and 10 years from now it'll sound as fresh as it does now.” Winnipeg Free Press
