Huw Chidgey &
Catherine Handley
Sometimes hauntingly beautiful, sometimes totally uplifting - a great blend of folk & classical from two gifted musicians.
"Ever since I saw them I knew there was something special about this duo, they complement each other so well". Frank Hennessey BBC Radio Wales.
Shades of Enya with solo keyboard and those ethereal voices echoing, full of good old Celtic stuff. It really is very different. I'll play this CD time after time." Review in Taplas of 'Journey'
Catherine is a great musician. Her ability as a flautist has made her a much sought after soloist and session musician in the classical world. She is currently principal flute with the Welsh Sinfonia and has played with many major British orchestras. She also plays whistle and Keyboards and adds many vocal harmonies in this partnership with Huw. Catherine also has a gift for melody writing, and several of her compositions appear on the new recording “A Journey”. Her writing and arranging ability is evident on such songs as “The Journey” and “Ar Lan y Mor”
Huw is the guitar player and lead singer in the partnership. He has played in bands and solo since the early eighties, when he was resident performer at the well-respected Dingles Folk Club in London. In 1998, having lived in the Scottish Borders for a number of years, he joined the Hanky Panky Band with whom he toured in Europe and played summer seasons in Majorca and Cyprus. In his time in Scotland, Huw won the 1997 Newcastleton Festival Traditional Singers competition, and the prestigious New Border Ballad song writing competition within the same summer. He now lives in Cwmaman, South Wales, the village in which he was born and raised.
Together Catherine and Huw provide one of the most entertaining evenings you could wish for. Besides the music, which is never less than excellent, Huw is a very witty raconteur and his storytelling is legendary. When the party mood is about and space allows it, they also play and call a few dances either throughout the evening, or at the end of the show.
Our View: A formidable partnership. Catherine’s flute and keyboard are the perfect accompaniment to Huw’s stunning voice. Together they create a warm, passionate atmosphere – no matter what the space. At the end of one of their shows no-one ever wants to leave.
