“One of the most expressive singers in traditional country music.” The Washington Post

With firm roots in folk, bluegrass and country, Phil Rosenthal’s music is a delight for anyone who appreciates quality musicianship. His rich baritone voice, lively instrumental work and relaxed stage presence have charmed audiences throughout the USA, Europe and Japan, including appearances  at the White House and the Grand Ole Opry.

A former member of the legendary band The Seldom Scene, described by Cashbox as “America’s greatest bluegrass band”, he was appointed Connecticut State Troubadour in 1994, a post he still holds! His original compositions have been recorded by dozens of highly respected musicians including Johnny Cash, Nick Cave and Bill Monroe. A pioneer in bringing traditional musical styles to children and young people he has perhaps done more to ensure the continuity of American roots music than almost any other performer. His contribution has been recognized with over 20 awards from such organizations as the American Library Association.

Phil has recently released a new album “A Treasury of Bluegrass and Country Songs” that finds the artist revisiting some of his all-time favourite tunes including ‘Beautiful Blue Eyes’, ‘Some Folks Do’ and ‘Camptown Races’ although the album also includes several of his own marvelous compositions. He is joined by several members of his extravagantly talented family - Beth and Naomi Sommers and Daniel, Lil and Irv Rosenthal. The album was recorded in Phil’s own studio in Connecticut and is the latest release on his own American Melody label. Phil’s mixture of memorable, original songs and classic favourites, expert picking on banjo, guitar and mandolin and warm presence have won him new fans everywhere he’s travelled.

Our View.  In his own country Phil is one of the most highly respected bluegrass/folk musicians of his generation. As former lead singer with ‘The Seldom Scene’, arguably the most influential bluegrass band of the past 30 years, he has earned that respect and now this master musician has finally reached these shores. A sure fire bet for those audiences that appreciate quality musicianship delivered with warmth and sincerity.
