Her last album ‘Achin In Yer Bones’ reached the no1 spot for 2009 on all college radio stations across Canada. It was also nominated for a 2010 Juno award for Album of The Year and won the 2009 WCMA Songwriter and Album of The Year awards. Now she returns as a duo with a new album on Continental Records and a new sound that she describes like this –
“We rock as an edgy blues electric duo. There is definitely Americana roots and country in the show but the overall sound is a dirty bluesy one. They are all my original tunes and Jason is off the charts as a guitar player. I think it may possibly blow people's minds.”
"This is the sort of sound you’d want to hear pouring out of roadhouses as you drive up expecting to get drunk and maybe fall in love". - David Cowling, Lead Writer, Americana UK Magazine
"Romi Mayes is something else. She writes great songs and she's got a great voice, but you should see her try to outrun a train. I think I had more fun on tour with Romi Mayes than I've ever had in my life" - Gurf Morlix, producer, musician
"If The Rolling Stones, Ray Charles, and Joan Jett could somehow have a love child, it'd be Romi Mayes". -Jason Nowicki, musician
"Music from the heart and soul, Romi Mayes makes it look easy." - Bob Harris, BBC
"Romi Mayes is the hardest-working person in the Americana scene right now. That's good, because she has a great new record out, and it deserves to be heard." - Slaid Cleaves, songwriter
"God may not have made honky-tonk angels, but came damned close with Romi Mayes" - Cindy Filipenko, Horizons Magazine
"She is going to blow you away."- Michael Nave. Woody Guthrie Folk Festival
"If you were around
the Canadian music scene in the late 80's and experienced the early buzz
surrounding the music of k.d lang then get ready for another chapter of the
same thing"-Larry
Delaney. Editor, Country Music News
"…rowdy enough to incite the most scandalous of bar brawls, yet sensitive
enough to track down and return the knocked out teeth to the proper recipient
the following morning." -
Shain Shapiro, The View, Hamilton.
From the centre of Canada, deep in the prairies, comes an unstoppable force that is becoming a household name across the globe: Romi Mayes. Suitably pronounced "Raw Me", Mayes is a straight shooter with heart on your sleeve lyrics, edgy innuendo, and some serious bad ass guitar playing. She writes about sex, drugs, love, and the road. She can be soft and sweet or just down right dirty.
Her latest release "Achin In Yer Bones" is another testament to exactly that. With no filters and no shame, she unravels herself layer by layer baring her being to her listeners from song to song. But honesty is only part of the charm, not the main talent here. Achin In Yer Bones was nominated for a 2010 Juno award for Album of The Year. The album also won 2009 WCMA Songwriter and Album of The Year, the same two awards she garnered with her previous 2006 album "Sweet Somethin Steady". Achin In Yer Bones landed the #1 spot for 2009 across Canada on all college radio stations across the country. On her album, Mayes' effortless, matter-of-fact lyrical style weaves poetically around fantastic production, credited to renowned producer Gurf Morlix (Lucinda Williams, Robert Earl Keen, Mary Gauthier) who also worked with her on the acclaimed "Sweet Somethin Steady". It is no wonder a producer like Morlix would come up to Canada in the cold of winter from his home base in Texas to work with Mayes again. "Romi's writing on this new album is better than ever," says Morlix. "She's got the flint and she's got the steel - everything she needs to take her anywhere she wants to go."
Commonly referred to as the hardest working musician in Canada, Mayes tours steadily and relentlessly across the globe from solo shows in quaint venues to rowdy rockin bar shows to tightly arranged full band mainstage festival and sold out theatre shows. Her present 4 piece line up is the best it's ever been for Mayes' sound.. Think The Rolling Stones meets Ray Charles meets Joan Jett.
She has shared the stage with the likes of Guy Clark, Levon Helm, Ricky Skaggs, Iris Dement, Jim Cuddy, Derek Trucks, The Flatlanders, Tom Russell, Martha Wainwright, Slaid Cleaves, Sam Baker, Hayes Carll, Fred Eaglesmith, Corb Lund, Billy Joe Shaver, Sue Foley, Jimmy LaFave, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Todd Snider, Dale Watson, Blackie and The Rodeo Kings, Marcia Ball and many more.
Romi Mayes is charming, passionate, comedic, and with whiskey in one hand and a cigarette in the other can out-cuss any sailor on a Saturday night.

UK TOUR CANCELLED
We are very sad to report that Romi Mayes has had to cut short her European tour because of exhaustion. She is currently in Belgium and saw a doctor this morning who told her to return home immediately for prolonged rest. In 15 years on the road this is the first time she has ever cancelled shows and not something she feels too good about ... but her health has to come first. This is a message from Romi -
